Buttons Up is a clever, visual close-up and parlor magic effect that delivers a moment of pure impossibility right in the spectator’s hands.

The magician displays a plate made of finest black plexiglas. Sewn securely to the plate are three buttons—each one clearly red. The back of the plate is shown, proving that the buttons are genuinely stitched through the material with visible strings.

The plate is then handed to a spectator, who is asked to hold it firmly between their hands so no one can touch it.

Next, the magician removes a single yellow button from their pocket and places it on their right hand. With the left hand passing gently over the button—without touching it and leaving several inches of space—the yellow button instantly changes color and becomes red.

The spectator is asked to look at the plate they are holding. In a stunning reversal, the center button on the plate has turned yellow. The plate may then be examined freely—the buttons are truly sewn in place.
