Black and White Surprise by Per Clausen
One of the cleanest and most memorable effects from Per Clausen, Black and White Surprise offers multiple phases of visual magic that practically work themselves. Based on Sam Dalal’s “Rainbow Chips,” this version uses precision-crafted brass chips and comes with two special cards for added impact.
The Effect
The magician displays a white chip in one hand and a black chip in the other. With hands closed and reopened, the chips magically change places—and this sequence is repeated to the audience’s amazement. Spectators begin to suspect the chips are double-sided, but then the routine takes an even stronger turn.
Two color cards, blue and yellow, are introduced. When placed between the chips, the black-and-white chips change to match the colors of the cards. Finally, as a kicker ending, the cards are turned over to reveal a red dot and a green dot—and now the chips have transformed to red and green with no trace of their original black and white. Everything can be fully examined at the conclusion.
